John Oleartchick, 95, died Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Rahway. He was born in Newark and lived in Carteret for the past 67 years. He retired in 1980 as a set-up man from New Departure Hyatt Roller Bearings in Clark with 44 years of service. He was a World War II Army veteran and served in the African, Sicily and Italy campaigns. He received the Bronze Star Medal, Five Battle Stars, European African Middle Eastern Campaigns Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a communicant and former trustee and usher at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Carteret. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Local 736 and the Ukrainian National Association and former member of the Carteret Citizen Club. He was a musician and played with the Oley Brothers Orchestra.
He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Oleartchick.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Ann (Derewesky) Oleartchick; daughter, Christine and her husband Charles Riska; son, Alan and his wife Cheryl Oleartchick; four grandchildren, Jonathan and his wife Debi Riska, Deborah and her husband Ross Anderson, Alan John and his wife Christina Oleartchick, and Tara and her husband Mark Allen; three great-grandsons, Nicholas and Zachary Riska and David Anderson. He is also survived by a brother, Nicholas Oleartchick and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
The funeral will be on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 9AM at Synowiecki Funeral Home, 56 Carteret Avenue in Carteret and 9:30AM at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Carteret. Entombment will be a St. Gertrude's Cemetery in Colonia at the Good Shepherd Chapel Mausoleum. Visitation will be on Friday, April 5, 2013 from 5PM to 9 PM. Parastas Service will be on Friday at 7PM. Semen Torbyn 92, of Carteret, died on March 28, 2013 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Rahway. He was born in Rohatyn, Ukraine and came to Carteret in 1954. He was a parishioner of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Carteret. Semen retired from ASNR in Perth Amboy.
He is survived by his wife, Teresa (Masluch) Torbyn and several nieces and nephews.
The Funeral will be on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 10AM at Synowiecki Funeral Home, 56 Carteret Avenue in Carteret, and 10:30AM at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Carteret. Interment will be at Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery in Hamptonburgh, NY. Visiting hours will be Monday from 4PM to 8PM. Parastas Service will be on Monday at 7PM.
Myron Hydzik, 88 of Parlin passed away Tuesday May 28th at his home in Parlin.
Born in Poland, Myron lived in Carteret for many years before moving to Parlin fourteen years ago. Retiring in 1993 he was employed as a chemical operator with Merck and Company in Rahway for twenty eight years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Carteret and also a past president of the Ukrainian American Citizens Club. Myron was very active in the Ukrainian community.
He is survived by his loving wife of fifty four years Sophie (Masluch) Hydzik, devoted children Stephen Hydzik and his wife Cathy of Hillsborough, Irene Pavlonnis and her husband Ted of Sayreville, two sisters Pauline and Slowka, four grandchildren Christina O’Hara and her husband James, Allison Hydzik, Stephen Hydzik, and Theodore James “TJ” Pavlonnis.
Funeral services will be held Saturday 9:30am from the Chubenko Funeral Home 625 Port Reading Ave., Port Reading followed by a 10:00am Funeral Liturgy at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Carteret with interment to follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia.

Michael Shwailik 89, of Manasquan, died on Feb. 16, 2013 at Manor by the Sea in Ocean Grove. He was born in Carteret and lived there for 82 years before moving to Manasquan in 2005. He had been a parishioner of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Carteret. Michael was a Machinist at SYNCRO Machine Company in Perth Amboy for many years.
He was an Army Veteran of World War II, having proudly served with the Army Engineers from 1943 to 1946 in the European Theater. Michael was a life member of both the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Star Landing Post 2314 and the American Legion Post 263 both of Carteret. He was an avid Giants fan and loved feeding and watching wild birds but most of all, he loved spending time with his family. Michael is predeceased by his parents, Peter and Anna Schwailik; and his brother Nicholas. He is survived by his son, Michael G. Shwailik and his wife, Laraine; his daughter, Michele Kacsur and her husband, Kenneth; his daughter , Melissa Anthony and her husband, John; his ten grandchildren; his six great grandchildren; his brother, Harry Schwailik; his sister-in-law, Elena Schwailik; and his niece and nephew.
Friends may call on Feb. 19, 2013, from 5 PM to 8 PM at Synowiecki Funeral Home, 56 Carteret Avenue in Carteret. The American Legion will hold it's ritual at 6:45PM and the VFW will be at 7PM.
