Ukrainian Independence Day

On Wednesday, August 24th, 2011 the Ukrainian Community in Carteret celebrated Ukrainian Independence Day with the raising of the Ukrainian Flag. After a prayer was offered by Father Vasyl Vladyka, Pastor of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Carteret Mayor Daniel J. Reiman delivered a short speech and read a Proclamation recognizing August 24th as Ukrainian Independence Day in Carteret.

During the raising of the Ukrainian flag, those present sang "Sche Ne Vmerla Ukraina" as well as "God Bless America". Afterwards, those present posed for some pictures. Click on the pictures to see a larger version.

"Dome" Improvement

After years of environmental damage, our once golden church domes appeared anything but. Finally we have restored the golden splendor of our Church Domes.

Besides the dome restoration, we have also undertaken projects to beautify the adjoining church property including the replacement of several sections of fencing as well as fresh paint on the rusty rails.

Father's Day Picnic

On Sunday, June 19, 2011, St. Mary's Church held its annual Father's Day Picnic. After a brief prayer service co-celebrated by Fathers Vasyl Vladyka and Joseph Szupa, those present loaded their plates with a bounty of home cooked dishes including holubtsi, varenyky, chicken,  countless salads and barbecued burgers and dogs courtesy of the grill master Chef Nick. As if that weren't enough, there was a variety of desserts as well.

Blessed by gorgeous weather, good music, good camaraderie and spirited song (which I haven't heard in ages!) everyone had a great time. For those who couldn't make it, you truly missed a wonderful picnic.

Thank you to all those who contributed, donated delicious foods, and those who assisted in setting up and cleaning afterwards. And thank you to the Committee Members for your help in the kitchen and throughout the day.
