Welcome To Our New Website

After months of work (and a little experimenting along the way), the St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church’s Website is up and running. Although we are still under construction (and probably will be for a while until we can get all the kinks out of it), we hope that it will help you “get to know” a little something about our Church, our Clergy and the people of our community.

We would suggest that you return to this page regularly for the latest bulletins, news and pertinent updates.

Just a short word on how to navigate your way around the website:

Home:            a brief description of our parish as well as "quick links"

with which you may contact us or find us

About Us:     where we’ve been and where we’re going

News:            what’s new in our community and a bulletin archive

            Resources:  educational and liturgical items

Events:          a synopsis of upcoming events

            Photos:          pictures from church activities

Links:             access to other parishes and cultural sites

I hope that you will take some time to familiarize yourself with this site inasmuch as it is a resource for you, our parish member, as well as a place where you can share your stories, pictures  and comments.

And if you are not a member, but would be interested in learning more about us, please feel free to navigate our site and we hope that we can peak your interest enough to come visit our church.

If you would like to share your comments about the website (how to improve it or features you would like to see or to share your pictures) please feel free to

I look forward to serving you, and hope that you find this site to be spiritually enlightening and enriching.

St. Mary’s Receives Funding

Recently, St. Mary’s Church was awarded a Community Development Block Grant as part of the Borough of Carteret’s Non-Profit Capital Improvement Program. Nicholas Kowalchyn accepted the facsimile check from Mayor Daniel J. Reiman in the amount of $5000. The grant must be matched dollar for dollar with funding from our parish and we will be reimbursed the money once cancelled checks are submitted. The improvements need to be completed by the 1st of November.

The grant is to be utilized for stopping water from leaking into the building. The problem areas were isolated via an inspection by a certified engineer who was provided to us (free of charge) by Mr. Andrew Janiw. The problem is being addressed by repairing the roof around the domes, sealing and caulking the windows and doorways and by repairing and sealing the area around the front steps.

We will be addressing the bathrooms as well. We are hoping to be able to bring the toilets back to floor level and install new sinks. And if the budget allows, we are looking towards renovating them as well. Of course, those improvements can’t be done until the water intrusion is abated.

Ukrainian Independence Day

On Tuesday morning, August 24, 2010, the Ukrainian community in Carteret gathered at the borough hall for the annual flag raising in honor of Ukrainain Independence Day. After a prayer was offered by Father Vasyl Vladyka, Pastor of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Carteret Mayor Daniel J. Reiman delivered a short speech and read the Proclamation recognizing August 24th as Ukrainian Independence Day in Carteret.

During the raising of the Ukrainian flag, those present sang "Sche Ne Vmerla Ukraina" as well as "God Bless America". Afterwards, those present posed for some pictures. Click on the pictures to see a larger version.
